How close is too close? (by resolution)
A 85" screen is about 42 inches tall. The closer you sit, the more the panel's pixels matter — this is the nearest you can sit before they show:

How we work it out
What matters to your eyes is the viewing angle — how much of your field of view the screen fills — not the diagonal alone. For a 16:9 set the screen width is the diagonal × 0.8716, so a 85" TV is about 74 inches wide. We solve the angle θ = 2 · atan( (width ⁄ 2) ÷ distance ) for three industry targets:

Sitting closer than the immersive distance can mean moving your eyes and neck to take in the whole picture, which gets tiring.
